Miele Dishwasher Not Draining: Standing Water in the Bottom

When a Miele dishwasher leaves a pool of water in the bottom after a cycle, the drain path is blocked somewhere between the sump and the sink. Most of the time it is the filter. Here is how to trace it, the F11 connection, and when the pump or valve makes it a service call.

The short answer: standing water at the end of a cycle means the wash water is not being pumped out, and the block is usually the filter or debris in the sump, which you can clear yourself. Lift out the filter, clean the sump, and check the drain hose for a kink. If the water still will not clear, or the machine is showing F11, the fault has moved to the non-return valve, the drain pump, or the connection under the sink, and that is a technician visit.

What Is Happening at the End of the Cycle

A Miele dishwasher ends each program by running the drain pump to push the used water through the sump, out the drain hose, and into the disposal or drain line under the sink. If anything along that path is restricted, the pump cannot clear the water in time and it settles back into the bottom of the tub. That is why draining problems almost always show up as a pool of water sitting in the base after the cycle finishes, sometimes with a gurgling sound as the pump struggles.

Miele also builds in the Waterproof System, which uses a float in the base tray to shut things down if it detects a leak. A drainage problem itself does not usually trip that float, but if a clog forces water where it should not go and it reaches the base tray, the float can add a stop on top of the drain issue. Sorting the drain path from a leak is part of the diagnosis.

Because so many of these point back to a single fault, a Miele that will not drain very often shows the F11 drain code at the same time. The code and the standing water are two views of the same problem, and the diagnostic order is the same either way.

Start with the Filter and Sump

The filter is the first and easiest suspect. Twist out the cylindrical filter in the base of the tub, rinse it under the tap, and clear any food debris and the coarse strainer sitting beneath it in the sump. Wipe the sump area so nothing can get drawn back into the pump. Run a rinse cycle. A clogged filter is the single most common reason a Miele stops draining, and this step alone resolves a large share of calls.

The Drain Hose, Non-Return Valve, and Pump

If the filter is clean and water still sits in the tub, follow the path outward. The drain hose can kink behind the machine or clog with grease. The non-return valve, which keeps drained water from flowing back into the tub, can jam with debris. The drain pump itself can fail or have its impeller jammed by a fragment of glass or a fruit pit. These need the machine pulled and the pump opened, so they are technician work rather than owner fixes.

The Connection Under the Sink

Where the drain hose meets the plumbing, a blocked air gap or a disposal whose knockout plug was never removed will stop the water cold. This shows up most often right after a new install or after garbage disposal work. A drain loop mounted too low can also let water siphon back. These are quick to confirm once a technician traces the line under the sink.

Bail the Water Before You Start

Before cleaning the filter, scoop or sponge out the standing water so you are not working in a full tub. Watch for broken glass or hard debris, which is exactly what jams a drain pump. If you find water underneath the machine or the base feels wet, stop and treat it as a possible leak, since that can trip the Waterproof System float. For more on that, see our page on water leaking.

What a Technician Checks

A Miele drain diagnosis follows the water out of the tub. The technician confirms the filter and sump are clear, then checks the drain hose for kinks and clogs and inspects the non-return valve for debris. The drain pump is tested and the impeller checked for a jam. If the machine is newly installed or was recently worked on, the air gap, the disposal connection, and the drain loop height under the sink are verified. If any water has reached the base tray, the source of that leak is found before the float can reset.

When to Call a Technician

Clean the filter and sump, clear any debris, and check the drain hose for a kink first. Call for service when the water still will not clear, when F11 keeps returning, when the pump is silent or grinding, or when the trouble started right after a new install or disposal work. Call right away if you find water beneath the machine, since a leak can trip the Waterproof System. Every repair we perform in Long Island City carries our Written warranty terms for eligible completed repairs. Diagnostic and travel fees, if applicable, are confirmed before the appointment and before repair approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is There Standing Water in the Bottom of My Miele Dishwasher?
Standing water means the dishwasher could not pump the wash water out at the end of the cycle. The most common cause is a clogged filter or food debris in the sump, which an owner can clean. If the filter is clear, the drain hose, non-return valve, drain pump, or the air gap and disposal connection under the sink may be blocked, and those are technician checks.
Is a Miele Draining Problem the Same as an F11 Code?
They are closely related. F11 is Miele's drain fault, which the control board sets when the water is not pumped out within the expected time. So a Miele that will not drain often shows F11. The fix is the same: clean the filter and sump first, and if the water still will not clear, have the drain pump, non-return valve, and hose checked.
Can I Fix a Miele That Will Not Drain Myself?
Sometimes. Clearing the filter, removing debris from the sump, and checking the drain hose for a kink are safe owner steps that resolve many drain problems. If the water still will not clear, the fault is usually a clogged non-return valve, a failed drain pump, or a blocked air gap, and those require a technician to open the pump and test it.
