Why Is My Appliance Leaking Water?

Every frost-free refrigerator makes some water by design. During each defrost cycle, frost melts off the evaporator, runs down a channel into a drain, and evaporates from a pan near the compressor. A leak means that path is blocked somewhere, or a separate water line has failed. A dishwasher, by contrast, handles gallons at a time, so its leaks are usually at a seal, a drain, or an overfill control. Where the water shows up is the fastest way to tell which.

Most Common Causes

• Clogged defrost drain. The most frequent refrigerator culprit. Food debris and mineral scale plug the drain, so defrost melt water backs up and pools under the drawers or freezes into a sheet at the bottom of the freezer.
• Leaking ice-maker or dispenser line. A cracked fitting or split poly line drips at the back or under the unit, often reaching the floor before you notice.
• Cracked or overflowing drain pan. If the evaporation pan is cracked, or the condenser fan that helps evaporate it has failed, the pan overflows onto the floor.
• Worn or misaligned door gasket. A gasket that no longer seals lets warm, humid air into the cabinet, where it condenses on cold surfaces and drips.
• Dishwasher door seal or gasket. A hardened or misaligned door gasket lets wash water escape at the front of the tub during a cycle.
• Dishwasher fill valve or float. A stuck fill valve, or a float that fails to shut off the fill, lets the tub overfill and spill; many built-ins also trip a base-pan leak float.

The leak comes from the same short list of sources on every appliance, but the parts and the fault reporting differ. Here is how it tends to present on the brands we service.

• Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Built-in refrigeration uses a defrost drain that can freeze and back up under the drawers. Cove dishwashers leak most often at the door gasket or drain. The control board stores fault codes we read on arrival.
• Thermador, Bosch, and Miele. These post numeric or E-series fault codes. On refrigerators the defrost drain and dispenser line lead; on dishwashers the door seal, drain pump, and a tripped AquaStop or leak-protection float are the usual sources.
• Viking, Monogram, and Dacor. Single-compressor refrigerators where the defrost drain, drain pan, and ice-maker line are the common leak points.
• Liebherr and True Residential. Built-in columns and drawers prone to a frozen defrost drain that pushes water out the door. We clear and treat the drain and, where fitted, service the drain heater.
• Gaggenau and KitchenAid. Diagnosed by fault code and the same drain, gasket, pan, and water-line checks that apply across refrigeration and dishwashers.

What We Do

We start by tracing the water to its source rather than assuming. On a refrigerator we inspect the defrost drain and flush it if blocked, pressure-check the ice and dispenser lines, examine the drain pan and condenser fan, and test the door gasket with a dollar-bill pull test around the full perimeter. On a dishwasher we test the door seal, the fill valve and float, and the drain path. Once the source is confirmed, we quote a fixed price before repairing it, and we address the moisture already inside so mildew does not follow. What You Can Check First

• Note exactly where the water appears: inside under the drawers, or outside on the floor.
• Wipe the area dry and watch which spot refills, which tells us the path.
• Check that doors close fully and are not held ajar by a bin or an overloaded dishwasher rack.
• Look behind the unit for a visibly wet water line or fitting.

When to Call Now

Treat it as urgent when water is spreading across the floor toward cabinetry or flooring, when you find a wet electrical area, or when the leak returns within hours of being wiped. Slow interior condensation can be scheduled, but active floor water should be addressed the earliest available.
