Why Is Frost Building Up in My Freezer?

Every time the freezer door opens, a little humid air enters and freezes onto the evaporator coil hidden behind the back panel. A frost-free system runs a heater across that coil a few times a day to melt the frost, which drains away before it can build. When you see visible frost in the compartment, that cycle has broken, or humid air is entering faster than the cycle can clear it.

Most Common Causes

• Failed defrost heater. The heater that melts frost off the evaporator has burned out, so ice grows on the coil until it blocks airflow. This is the most common cause of a frost-free unit frosting over.
• Defrost thermostat fault. The bi-metal thermostat that lets the heater run when the coil is cold can fail open, leaving the heater dead even though the timer calls for defrost.
• Defrost timer or control fault. A mechanical timer or the electronic control that triggers the defrost cycle can stop advancing, so the cycle never starts.
• Worn or misaligned door gasket. A seal that no longer holds lets humid room air pour in, overwhelming even a working defrost system with frost around the door and vents.
• Blocked defrost drain. If melt water cannot drain, it refreezes at the bottom of the compartment as a growing sheet of ice.
• Door left ajar or overloaded. A drawer that will not close, or items blocking the door, lets warm air in continuously and frosts the compartment.

The defrost system works the same way across the roster, but the components and diagnostics differ. Here is how frost tends to present on the brands we service.

• Sub-Zero. Built-in and integrated units use an electronic defrost control that stores a service code; a failed heater or thermostat and a frozen drain are the usual causes. Dual-refrigeration models have a separate evaporator per section to check.
• Wolf. A frost complaint on a Wolf badge is a companion Sub-Zero or Cove unit, which we diagnose on the diagnostic.
• Thermador, Bosch, and Miele. These post fault codes and often flag a defrost-circuit fault directly, pointing us at the heater, thermostat, or sensor.
• Viking and Monogram. Single-compressor freezers where a burned-out defrost heater or a failed thermostat is the common cause of a frosted coil.
• Liebherr and True Residential. Integrated columns and drawers prone to a frozen defrost drain that both frosts the base and can push water out the door.
• Gaggenau and Dacor. Diagnosed by fault code and the same defrost-heater, thermostat, timer, gasket, and drain checks that apply across the roster.

We check the drain for a freeze plug and test the gasket around the full perimeter. What You Can Check First

• Make sure drawers and doors close fully and nothing is holding them ajar.
• Check the gasket for tears, folds, or grime that keeps it from sealing.
• Confirm the unit is not packed so tightly that vents are blocked.
• Note whether frost is worst on the back wall, at the door, or as a sheet on the floor of the compartment.

When to Call Now

Light frost can be scheduled. Call sooner when frost has grown enough that the fresh-food section is warming, when a sheet of ice is spreading across the freezer floor, or when frost returns within days of a manual defrost, since those point to a failed defrost component.
